The Bride of Frankenstein

This work is inspired by the story of the broken heart of Frankenstein’s monster, the fictional character of gothic novel by the English writer Mary Shelley «Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus», first published in 1818. The book tells the story of the scientist Victor Frankenstein, who managed to comprehend the secret of the origin of life and learned to revive lifeless matter. He worked on the creation of an artificial human, but as he reached that goal, he realized that he had created a Monster.
«The Bride of Frankenstein» is a 1935 film based on a Mary Shelley’s novel and is a sequel to it. The plot is very simple: two scientists create a girlfriend for the Monster rejected by people. However, the Bride is scared and rejects the Monster just like everyone else. In despair, realizing that he is doomed to be alone forever, the Monster blows up the laboratory with himself and the Bride.
I chose this story because I like the character of the Bride of Frankenstein and it really inspires me. Initially, I wanted to portray a happy love story when characters were literally made for each other. But then I found out that the plot of the film, in which the character of the Bride first appears, tells the opposite story. And then appeared the idea to separate the Monster and the Bride visually with a lightning strike, thereby emphasizing this emotional moment.
The Bride and the Monster are depicted against a broken heart. Lightning, tearing the heart apart is a reference to how the Bride and the Monster were created — during thunderstorms involving electricity from lightning. The shape of the handbag is due to the fact that both the Monster and the Bride were created from fragments of dead bodies.
Despite the gloom of the theme, used materials, such as transparent plastic, heart-shaped carbines, bright color accents and shining crystals and sequins, made it possible to show this story in the style of comics, which in some way reflects what the gothic characters have become nowadays — the Monster and the Bride and their different variations today can often be seen even in children’s cartoons.
